Summary: The Alfred Taubman segment
Comment: Billionaire shopping- mall developer Alfred Taubman tells his story to Charlie Rose. He speaks about his experience in prison after having been convicted for fraud in connection with an alleged attempt on his part to rig prices in public auctions. Taubman was then the owner of Sotheby's which he had bought after making his fortune in the building of forty malls in which luxury iterms were for sale. He tells Charlie Rose that he was a victim of trusting one employee who out of greed tried to do something illegal, and then blamed him for it. Taubman is a large man apparently in his early eighties and speaks with a certain calmness. He tells of his time in prison spent reading , exercising, and considering the letters of fellow prisoners who were trying to prove their innocence. He believed a minority of them, but speaks out strongly against what he regards to be excessive prison - terms for offenses such as purchasing an illegal drug. Taubman comes with a book he has written 'Threshhold Resistance' and says he has written the book for his nine grandchildren. Taubman is a superwealthy person who paid a fine of 286 million dollars to get out of prison. He says he is not angry but feels sorry for the employee who betrayed him for she has ruined her life.
Charlie Rose says at the introduction that he has known Taubman for many years. He does not however call him his 'friend' as he does with many others. However his having him on the show is certainly a gesture of friendship, when he could have distanced himself completely from Taubman.
Again the Charlie Rose show allows me to see and hear people who I have read about but would never get to ' see ' otherwise. Charlie Rose has among his friends the successful in all fields, and these include many of the superwealthy.
Taubman appears on this show as a fundamentally decent and enterprising person.
